Higher Education in the United Kingdom is recognised all around the world for its high standards of scholarship and research – 7 of the UK’s universities are ranked in the World’s Top 50 and, of course, 2 of those universities are in the World Top 5 – Oxford and Cambridge.
Many of the top universities belong to what is known as the Russell Group. The name is supposedly based on the fact that the Vice Chancellors for the group meet for tea and cakes at the Russell Hotel in central London at Russell Square!
Along with Oxford and Cambridge, Russell Group universities offer the British equivalent to the Ivy League in the United States – the Russell Group includes the top London universities – UCL, King’s, Imperial College, and the London School of Economics – as well as such prestigious universities like Edinburgh in Scotland, Bristol in South West England, and Durham in the North.

In all, the UK has nearly 170 universities and colleges of Higher Education. Many of the smaller ones have their own unique specialisations geared to particular career paths for those students who are less interested in a traditional academic degree and are looking to develop skills for the workplace. For example, Bournemouth University is generally accepted as the market leader for film and media courses, while the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts the brainchild of Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles provides education and training in music, theatre and performance design, nurturing new generations of innovative British artists.
Programmes of study vary from a single subject to combined honours degrees (the study of two or more subjects). Many offer the chance to gain professional experience through work placements with leading companies. Exchange study programmes with universities overseas are a feature of degrees which offer the study of other languages and cultures.

Students usually seek help about 18 months prior to their enrolment at university. Russell Group Universities:
The Russell Group represents 24 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector. The Russell Group was formed in 1994 by 17 British research universities –. In 1998 Cardiff University and King's College London joined the group. In December 2005 it was announced that the Russell Group would be appointing its first full-time director-general as a result of a planned expansion of its operations, including commissioning and conducting its own policy research. In November 2006 Queen's University Belfast was admitted as the twentieth member of the group. In March 2012 it was announced that four universities – Durham, Exeter, Queen Mary University of London; and York – would become members of the Russell Group in August of the same year.
